The 6-Traits of Writing

The 6-Traits of Writing are the qualities that teachers, writers, and readers think are important to good writing.  These traits are used in conjunction with the Writing Process.

The 6-Traits

Ideas/Focus - is where writing is centered on one main idea or topic.

Organization - is good writing that is easy to follow.  Ideas flow clearly from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph.

Word Choice - is clear, precise, and colorful words that express the meaning and attitude the writer wishes to express.  In 4th grade that means... No "baby-doe-doe" words aloud!

Sentence Fluency - is the rhythm and flow of sentences that make a story easy and pleasurable to read.  It is shown by a variety in sentence lengths.  We do this with the use of EXPANDERS.

Voice - is where the story "sounds" like the writer.  It lets the reader know that the writer has a unique perspective or out look on a topic.

Conventions - are used to enhance the visual look and readability of the story.  This is done with CUPS: Capitalization, Usage, Punctuation, and Spelling.
